Modern gaming is rubbish Part XVIV - "Day 1 updates"

To quote Mr Zorg in "The Fifth Element", I only have this to say about Forza Horizon 5 without even playing it...

"I'm disappointed. And I do not like to be disappointed".

What, so you're talking about how crappy a game is before even playing it? That's a new low for you dude.

Wait a second though, I own it, I bought it on launch day (silly silly me) but I made one fatal mistake. I bought a boxed copy.

Remember the good old days when you'd excitedly rush to the store to pick up a new game, run home, skive off school for the day and spend the rest of the day playing it? Those days are sadly long gone it seems so like many others I fancied the physical media for this over the prospect of buying something 'intangible' from the Xbox Store - and that my dears was my first mistake.

You see, those who chose to buy it digitally could 'pre load' it, letting it drip feed download on their Xboxes ready to be played at launch. A 20GB update later and they were in the game.

Those of us who chose the boxed copy got that 20GB update, but then got a whopping 95GB (NINETY FUCKING FIVE GIGABYTE) update before the game could even get past the pretty loading screen above. Let me just repeat that again. NINETY FUCKING FIVE GIGABYTES OF UNSKIPPABLE DOWNLOAD BEFORE YOU'RE ALLOWED TO PLAY THE FUCKING GAME YOU JUST PAID AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF MONEY TO PLAY.

95GB for those of you lucky enough to live in an area where you can get fibre to your home, and languish in fantastic download speeds probably doesn't seem that problematic. Where I live we get copper and copper only. No I don't live in a posh farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, I live in a modern town (well I say modern...) that just happens to have next to no fibre infrastructure, certainly none where I live (in a less than 20 year old house).

So topping out at around 15-16mbs (which isn't my ISP download speed, that's the speed MS seems to cripple its update connections to) guess how long it's going to take me to download this update...anyone? No? Around 28 hours.

Modern gaming really is rubbish, but this sort of thing is unforgiveable. See, this is where Sony have it right - you can play a new game without applying the update (maybe at the cost of no connectivity to online games but who gives a poo about that). BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN PLAY YOUR BRAND NEW GAME WHILE THE UPDATE DOWNLOADS IN THE BACKGROUND.

I'm sure this will be worth the wait, well I bloody hope so as it's very rare for me to even bother with new games on launch but as the Xbox One is purely my "Forza Horizon (and a tiny bit of Sunset Overdrive)" box"*, I'm pretty annoyed to say the least...

* (aside from the rare occasions I download Xbox360 updates to play my old back catalogue).
